How much for paint?

Postby mikew » Sat Jan 15, 2011 11:11 am

Can anyone give me a general idea how much I should expect to pay to get a frame and tank painted including the preparation? I'm just trying to work out whether I can afford any of this. Thanks

It all depends how good of job/finish you want.
I kept costs down because I did much of the preparation myself. For example, recently I had a frame and panels done, I already had them shot-blasted and etched-primed. Then they were 2K primed, by a sprayer. Thereafter, I prepped. Then I sent the parts back for top coat.

It isn’t cheap for a quality job: you pay for what you get. I paid, but boy did i get a quality/depth finish. 8-)
Yet sometimes restoration is about having a go for yourself. Your choice.

Good luck and welcome...

Many thanks for your comments. I guess it's early days for me I'm still deciding how far down the restoration route I go. I've not actually bought anything yet but can see some complete bikes for sale look better than the really are.
Cheers

I forgot to say you could get the frame powder-coated. While it all depends what type/year or fizz you would like to restore. The later 80s FS1's don't fetch as much money. The advantage to that is you can pick them up a lot cheaper.

It's about Choice: a boxed rusty pre-77 can cost more that a later decent 80's FS1 with tax and MOT.

However, I would love to restore a Baja Brown speedblock.

Hint, any members want to chuck me a frame, engine, etc for a fair and honest price?

I charge £150 for a fizzy frame £50 extra for the stand and swinging arm.
This include sand blasting etch and two pack priming.

Tinware sets are £300.00 which by todays standards is very cheap.

I have painted 367 Fizzy tinware sets various shapes and sizes over the last few years and over 50 frames.

You can argue with those prices. Quality finish and kind on the wallet. 8-)
